BP Gulf oil spill might now be unstoppable.

“In a nutshell, “the well bore structure is compromised ‘down hole’,” we read, meaning that no surface capping will ever, at this point, work. The well is leaking in too many places, and the seabed itself is now beginning to show signs of collapse.

Indeed, the comment immediately following suggests that “a massive collapse of the Gulf floor itself is in the making,” and that “fracturing and a complete bleed-out are already underway”—meaning that no fewer than 2 billion barrels of oil could leak into the Gulf before the reservoir has fully depleted itself. That’s two billion.”

Sweet Jesus. I have no words.

Former addicts discussing their recoveries often refer to recognition of their problems, but also to their inability to effect any sort of change until hitting “rock bottom.”

The situation in the Gulf is obviously going to have far-reaching environmental repercussions, there’s no avoiding that.  There’s nothing I can do about that.

However, I am hopeful that it will serve as rock bottom for our global dependence on oil.  We haven’t quite managed to destroy our planet, but if we keep going on the path we’re on that will surely be the end result.  I hope this is as bad as it gets, and that mankind as a society will really throw our resources into developing clean sources of fuel so that this never, ever happens again.

The way I see it, it’s far more likely that the pres will just use it as a way to ration oil. I’ve heard of several attempts to use equipment that would be able to sift the oil out and even re-use most of it, but our stupid leaders inexplicably prohibited it. I blame our leader about as much as I blame BP. BP caused this and Obama won’t let them fix it.

This whole debacle will be used as an argument to stop offshore drilling altogether, and I believe Obama seeks to make that argument as powerful as possible.

I say let em clean it up, put better checks on the equipment, and get back to drillin.

there’s a 70-80% oxygen loss in the water around the Gulf because of the oil. So now major predators, mammals, fish,...
